Museum library

Completion of work on inventorying and cataloging the library collection of the Tadeusz Kosciuszko Museum in Solothurn.

The development of the library began in 1937 with the opening and operation of the museum. The basis for the establishment of the museum's book collection was the growing collection of books, periodicals and prints donated to the museum. The library contains books in various languages and the current book collection comprises 548 volumes.
It is hoped that this collection will inspire further research into this great hero and contribute to a deeper understanding of his role in shaping the idea of freedom throughout the world.

General Assembly of the Kosciuszko Society

At the beginning of November, the annual general meeting of the Kosciuszko Society took place in the auditorium of the BBZ-Solothurn.

The meeting was chaired by the president of the Kosciuszko Society, Dr. Remo Ankli, alongside the board members. The chargé d'affaires of the Polish Embassy in Bern, Mr. Marek Minarczuk, also attended the event.

The second part of the meeting began with a violin concert by the young Polish artist Daniel Czechowski, who lives in Switzerland. The diverse program captivated the audience and promises a bright future for this talented musician.

Continuation of the Kościuszko Tradition

On October 20, 2024, a ceremony was held to commemorate the 207th anniversary of Tadeusz Kościuszko's death. In Zuchwil, a wreath-laying ceremony took place in front of the general’s monument, attended by representatives of the Polish and American embassies.

The Polish Embassy was represented by the Chargé d'Affaires a.i. of the Republic of Poland, Marek Minarczuk, Consul Kinga Koltun, and Defense, Military, and Air Attaché Colonel Pawel Piecyk, while Major Mikhail A. Fedorchik represented the American side. The ceremony was honored by the presence of representatives from the city and canton of Solothurn, the municipality of Zuchwil, as well as members of the Polish community and local guests.

A delegation from the "Solbet" Capital Group, led by Director Krystyna Rembiałkowska from Solec Kujawski, Poland, also attended the celebrations. The company sponsored a trip to Switzerland for two of the best students from the Tadeusz Kościuszko School in Solec Kujawski and the school’s director, allowing them to visit the museum and participate in the celebrations.

All attendees were welcomed by Stefanie Ingold, Mayor of Solothurn.

This year, two weeping willows were planted, continuing a tradition from 1832. At that time, Ludwika Sosnowska’s granddaughter planted two willows in Zuchwil to remember the unfulfilled love between Kościuszko and Ludwika. Her father had forbidden her to marry the less wealthy suitor.

Conference in Chicago

The 46th Session of the Permanent Conference of Polish Museums, Archives, and Libraries in the West (MABPZ) took place from September 24 to 28 in Chicago, with a delegation from the Kościuszko Museum in attendance. Representatives of the most important Polish cultural institutions outside of Poland participated in the conference. It provided an opportunity to showcase unique collections, exchange experiences, and strengthen collaboration among the participants.

The delegates visited the library, archives, and the Polish Museum of America. They attended lectures and participated in discussions about key initiatives and challenges facing Polish cultural institutions.

Additionally, there was an opportunity to visit selected Polish churches in Chicago and the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland. A highlight was the meeting with the friendly Association of Friends of Polish Lancers, named after General Tadeusz Kościuszko, which is active in Chicago. The impressive lancer traditions and the wonderful atmosphere will remain in our memories for a long time and will hold a special place in the history of our museum's unforgettable encounters.

The Kosciuszko Society, which looks after and manages the Kosciuszko Museum in Solothurn, received funding this year from the "Promotion, Archives, Libraries and Museums Outside the Country in 2024 Year" programme from the Minister for Culture and National Heritage. Completion of the work is planned for the second half of December. We thank the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage for their support!

Summer at the Museum

As part of this year's "Summer at the Museum," visitors had the opportunity on August 24th to explore the museum's rooms for free, attend a guitar concert, and visit a book fair. The stands were dominated by publications about the life and work of Tadeusz Kościuszko – both in Polish and German. This offered a great opportunity to learn more about this remarkable figure and his impact on the history of Poland and other countries.

Among the available books were classic biographies as well as lesser-known studies and albums featuring unique photos and documents. Visitors included history enthusiasts, tourists, and families with children. The subtle sounds of the guitar created a special atmosphere in the museum's historic setting, encouraging discussions about cultural topics, thoughts, and perspectives.

A journey in the footsteps of Kosciuszko's heart in Switzerland and Italy

From August 15 to 18, a journey took place in the footsteps of Tadeusz Kosciuszko's heart, which led from Solothurn to Vezia near Lugano in Ticino and on to Varese, a town in the north of Lombardy in Italy.

The long and complex history of Kosciuszko's Heart's journey has left a lasting mark on the places he visited. Beautiful places and landscapes make for unforgettable memories. We cordially invite you to take part in the following walks organized by the Tadeusz Kosciuszko Museum in Solothurn as well as individual walks to these unforgettable places.

Perhaps we will see you on the way.

History lessons in the museum instead of at school

On Saturday 15 June, the Tadeusz Kościuszko Museum offered an unusual history lesson. Young people from the Polish school of the Polish Embassy in Bern, which is based in Zurich, had the opportunity to experience history in a lively way on the museum's premises.

The pupils listened with great interest to the information about Tadeusz Kościuszko and explored the museum's impressive collections. During the break, they enjoyed the cosy atmosphere in the courtyard.

The young people were enthusiastic about our exhibition and admired the preserved fortifications and the beautiful old buildings of the city.

Thank you very much for your visit - we look forward to seeing you again!

Open House Day at the Solothurn Museums

The Solothurn Museums were open to all visitors on May 26th. From 10 AM to 5 PM, all interested individuals could visit the various museums, which had prepared different programs. The Kosciuszko Museum also opened its doors and offered, among other things, a tasting of Polish specialties.

Visitors could not only admire the interiors where Tadeusz Kosciuszko spent the last years of his life but also other elements of the permanent gallery. There was also the opportunity for conversations and discussions on topics that interested the individual.

We are delighted that we could welcome you to our premises again this year!

Members of the Polish Parliament visit the museum

On 30 April, a delegation from the Polish-Swiss Parliamentary Group, consisting of Kazimierz Gołojuch MEP, Tadeusz Chrzan MEP, Zbigniew Ziejewski MEP, Józefa Szczurek-Żelazko MEP, Krzysztof Gadowski, State Secretary at the Ministry of Finance, and Senator Józef Zając, visited the Kościuszko Museum.

The guests from Poland were accompanied by the Polish Ambassador Iwona Kozłowska and the staff of the Polish Embassy in Bern.  The curator of the museum introduced the delegation to the history of Kościuszko's stay in Solothurn.

After visiting the museum, the parliamentary group travelled to Zuchwil, where they laid a wreath in front of the Tadeusz Kościuszko memorial. The Polish chapel, which was restored and designed by soldiers from the 2nd Foot Guards Division who were interned in Switzerland during the Second World War, attracted a great deal of interest.

Talks in the castle halls in Basel

At the beginning of April 2024, an interesting lecture on Tadeusz Kosciuszko "Enlightened Fortress Builders - Chief Engineer West Point 1778-1780" took place in Basel in the Schlosssäle, Stapfelberg 4.

The topic was presented by Patrick Borer. He introduced Tadeusz Kościuszko (1746-1817) not only as a Polish and American hero who fought for the independence of nations and the freedom of peoples, but also as a military engineer and builder of important military fortifications in the USA.

During the evening, part of the exhibition "Time Travel through Solothurn" was shown. Further interesting discussions took place over aperitifs.

230th Anniversary of the Kościuszko Uprising

230 years ago, on March 24, 1794, Tadeusz Kościuszko solemnly took an oath on the main square of Krakow, thus heralding the onset of a national uprising known as the Kościuszko Uprising. This uprising marked the final attempt to save the Republic of Poland and restore its full sovereignty.

To commemorate this anniversary, the Kościuszko Museum in Solothurn was inaugurated on Sunday, March 24, 2024, opening its collections to visitors. It provided an opportunity to admire the magnificent painting by Wojciech Kossak titled "The Oath on the Market Square in Krakow."
